about

Featured as part of Who BARTed. From the magazine:

"I always used to love coming out of the tunnel over West Oakland when I got the timing just right in the evening, when the light starts to change just before the sun really starts to set and all the cranes and shipping containers are lit up out the right window. There was one trip like that that I think of in particular—I don't remember the day exactly but it had to be late October 2019. I remember looking out the window and just feeling, in a way I never really had before, like the rest of my life was about to begin and like I'd never had so much to look forward to. It's a sweet memory. This track is an effort to recreate and inhabit that memory in sound.

It's based on two recordings of the same trip from Embarcadero to West Oakland, one recorded on a digital recorder, the other recorded onto a microcassette. I imagined the tracks as magnetic tape in a cassette and the train itself as the playhead in a tape deck playing back sounds like a song. I love all of those little sounds that put you nowhere else but on BART (even the screech): that high pitched whoosh of moving through the tunnel, the clacking of tracks, the hum that the old bois make. Many of these sounds are sampled and turned into instruments in their own right for this piece.

I guess really, behind all of this stuff, is the simple fact that I just love taking the train in any city, and that there's nothing like flying above traffic and under buildings to get where you're going. It's rarely lost on me what a marvel that is. So, this is about that too. "
